The Muuto In Situ Modular Sofa: Built for Your Room

In Situ Sofa by Muuto

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT

Sculptors use the term "in situ" for a work made for the exact place it stands, shaped by the site it will occupy. When the Norwegian studio Anderssen & Voll designed a modular sofa for Muuto, that is the name they reached for, and it is a fair description of how the sofa gets ordered. You build the one your room needs, module by module, in a fabric you choose.

Muuto describes the design as Italian grandeur met with Scandinavian simplicity, and both halves show. The scale is generous and deep, with a soft seat built for long stretches of lounging, while the lines stay clean and contained.

Nine Modules, Thirty Configurations

The system underneath is simple: nine different seating modules and two sizes of loose cushion. Muuto publishes 30 predesigned configurations built from those parts, from a compact 2-seater to corner landscapes that wrap two walls of a great room, and past those 30 you can compose your own. Anderssen & Voll have said they "wanted In Situ to be a sofa that could scale up and down in size, so it would feel like a really nice 2-Seater but could also grow to be a super big sofa landscape."

That scaling is what makes the sofa such a good match for open-concept main floors. A three-seater configuration floats cleanly in the middle of a room, and if a renovation or a move changes the space, modules can be added or rearranged to follow the new floor plan. Muuto's own planner at planner.muuto.com lets you test configurations against your floor plan before committing to one.

The Profile That Hides the Joins

Seen from the front, the In Situ reads as one continuous piece of furniture, and the reason is a single design move: a distinctive profile running along the seat and back edge that unifies the modules. The stitched detailing on the cushions has a similar effect, giving the upholstery a tailored line without stiffening the sofa's casual posture. Underneath, each module is built on an FSC-certified wood construction with foam and wadding, carried on a powder-coated steel frame.

The seat sits 15" off the floor and runs deep, and that geometry is why we recommend adding the loose cushions to any configuration. The large size fills the depth behind your back and brings you to a comfortable position for reading or conversation, while the small size adds lumbar support for sitting upright longer. The cushions are ordered separately from the modules, so each seat can be set up for the person who uses it most.

Choosing a Fabric

This is where the In Situ becomes a custom piece. On Muuto's site the sofa is offered in a deep textile range, including Kvadrat wools like Hallingdal and Vidar, textured weaves like Fiord and Steelcut, softer options like Clay and Divina, and Refine leather at the top of the range. The same custom upholstery program is available when ordering through us, so the configuration you build can arrive in almost any of those textiles.

We keep the 3-seater listed in two ready configurations, Clay 12 and Ocean 80, and treat those as starting points for the wider program. Fabric is the decision people underestimate on a sofa this size, because at three seats and up the upholstery becomes the largest block of colour and texture in the room. A wool with visible weave keeps a big footprint from reading flat, and a leather sharpens the whole silhouette.

If you want help narrowing the field, email our design team at design@habitus.ca. We can order fabric samples so you judge a weave in your own light, and we will walk a configuration and textile combination through to a finished order with you.

In the Room

In Muuto's own styling, the sofa appears alongside the Around Coffee Table, whose raised veneer edge echoes the sofa's horizontal line, and the Leaf Floor Lamp, which leans its light over an armrest for evening reading. In a great room, a corner configuration with a large Around table in front of it furnishes the space almost on its own.

For a wider look at how Muuto builds a sofa, our post on the Outline Sofa covers the construction and upholstery thinking behind the brand's other long-running seating design, and our Muuto brand spotlight puts the whole catalogue in context.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many configurations does the Muuto In Situ Sofa come in?

Muuto publishes 30 predesigned configurations built from nine seating modules, running from a 2-seater up to large corner landscapes. Beyond those, you can compose a custom configuration from the same modules, and Muuto's online planner lets you preview any layout before ordering.

Can I choose a custom fabric for the In Situ?

Yes. The In Situ is a made-to-order design, and the custom upholstery program on Muuto's site, including Kvadrat wools like Hallingdal and Vidar, textured weaves like Fiord and Steelcut, and Refine leather, is available when ordering through Habitus. Who designed the In Situ Modular Sofa?

The Norwegian design studio Anderssen & Voll designed the In Situ for Muuto. The name comes from the sculptor's term for a work made for the specific site where it stands, a nod to the way each sofa is configured for its own room.

What are the loose cushions for?

The In Situ's two loose cushion sizes are ordered separately from the seating modules, and on a seat this deep they earn their place in any configuration. The large size fills the depth behind your back for upright sitting, and the small size adds lumbar support.

A sofa this size is the anchor purchase of a main floor, and the In Situ treats it that way: a configuration shaped to your room, a fabric chosen in your own light, and a module system that can be reworked when the floor plan changes. The name refers to work made for a specific site, and that is how each one is ordered.

If you are weighing configurations or trying to land on a textile, our design team works through both with clients across Canada, samples included.
