The Art of Lighting
Designed by Poul Henningsen in 1958
PH 5
Poul Henningsen designed the PH 5 for Louis Poulsen in 1958, at a time when incandescent bulbs kept changing shape and size. He answered with a pendant built on his three-shade system that accepts any light source. The shades send most of the light down onto the table and pass a soft glow through the sides, so the fixture lights a dining room without glare. Early versions carried red and blue shades to improve the colour of the light; modern light sources made them unnecessary.
