FURNITURE
The central problem Anderssen and Voll set out to solve with the Outline was proportion. Most architectural sofas sacrifice seat depth to achieve a slim exterior profile. Most comfortable sofas sacrifice visual lightness to accommodate the volume their cushioning requires. The Oslo-based duo, who have been working with Muuto since the brand was founded in 2006, wanted both: a sofa that reads as a single clean geometric form from across the room and opens into a genuinely generous seat the moment you sit in it. Espen Voll described it as finding the right proportions to create a generous feeling in a compact footprint.
The Outline launched in 2016 and has become one of the most specified sofas in Muuto's catalogue. It is available as a two-seater, three-seater, and lounge chair, upholstered in an extensive range of Kvadrat textiles and leather.
Design and Construction
The inspiration Anderssen and Voll drew on was architectural rather than furniture-historical. They were interested in how planes overlap and juxtapose in buildings to create a sense of lightness, and applied that logic to a sofa silhouette. The result is a piece where the backrest, armrests, and seat are read as distinct overlapping planes rather than a single upholstered mass. The exterior stays taut and geometric. The interior delivers a 21" seat depth, which sits at the generous end of the category for a sofa with this kind of exterior restraint.
The frame is a wood and steel hybrid. The cushions are hand-sewn and filled with a cold foam granulate and feather combination, which holds its shape over years rather than compressing into a permanent body impression the way polyester fill does. The legs are die-cast aluminum, available in powder-coated black or polished finish, positioned set back from the base edge so the sofa appears to float above the floor. Standard seat height is 15.75", with a 17.75" option also available. The proportions hold consistently across the two-seater, three-seater, and lounge chair, so the family scales up and down without the smaller pieces looking diminished or the larger pieces looking heavy.
The legs sit in from the edge of the base, so the whole sofa lifts off the floor instead of planting on it. In a smaller room that gap is what keeps it from reading heavy. You see floor underneath it, and the piece feels lighter than its actual footprint.

Upholstery: Fabrics and Leathers
The Outline is available in a wide range of Kvadrat textiles. The options include Remix, Canvas, Fiord, Clara, Steelcut, Steelcut Trio, Hallingdal, Ecriture, Vidar, Divina, Divina MD, Divina Melange, Twill Weave, Balder, Acca, and Clay. Each fabric has its own texture, pile weight, and colour depth, and the right choice depends on what else is already in the room.
Remix is a loosely woven wool-polyester blend with a slightly textured surface. It reads casual and performs well in high-use rooms. Hallingdal is a tighter, denser wool weave with more visual weight, better suited to rooms that are more formal or considered in their material palette. Ecriture has a fine ribbed texture that reads refined without being precious. Fiord and Vidar both offer strong saturated colour options if the room calls for it. Several leather options are also available, including an aniline hide that develops a patina with use. Leather suits rooms that already skew toward dark-stained timber, aged brass, or deep-toned upholstery.
The aluminum base is available in powder-coated black or polished finish. Black grounds the piece and reads well in rooms with dark floors or other matte black elements. Polished suits rooms with brass, warm metal, or reflective surfaces elsewhere. View the Outline 2-Seater or View the Outline 3-Seater.
Where It Works and How to Place It
The Outline is designed to be seen from multiple angles, so it performs best in a living room where the sofa sits away from the wall with sightlines from at least two sides. An open-plan layout where the sofa anchors the living zone within a larger kitchen-dining-living space is the natural environment for this piece. The taut exterior silhouette is built to be read from the back and sides, not just the front.
In smaller rooms, the two-seater holds its proportions better than the three-seater and leaves more floor space to work with. One or two Outline Lounge Chairs alongside the two-seater often produces a more balanced and flexible seating arrangement than trying to fit a three-seater in a room that is not scaled for it. The lounge chair carries the same construction and the same set-back aluminum legs, so it reads as part of the same family whether you match the upholstery exactly or layer complementary fabrics. Pairing the sofa and chair in different fabrics from the same colour family gives a seating arrangement deliberate contrast without looking mismatched. Frequently Asked Questions
What fabrics and leathers is the Muuto Outline Sofa available in?
The Outline is available in a wide range of Kvadrat textiles, including Remix, Canvas, Fiord, Clara, Steelcut, Steelcut Trio, Hallingdal, Ecriture, Vidar, Divina, Divina MD, Divina Melange, Twill Weave, Balder, Acca, and Clay. Several leather options are also available, including an aniline hide. The textiles range from casual, hard-wearing weaves through to denser, more refined surfaces, so the right choice depends on the room.
What is the seat depth of the Muuto Outline Sofa?
The seat depth is 21" on both the two-seater and three-seater. Standard seat height is 15.75", with a 17.75" option also available. For a sofa with this kind of architectural exterior profile, the seat depth is notably generous. Most people are surprised by it the first time they sit down.
How is the Muuto Outline Sofa constructed?
The frame is a wood and steel hybrid. The cushions are hand-sewn and filled with a cold foam granulate and feather combination that holds its shape over time, not polyester fill that compresses and stays compressed. The legs are die-cast aluminum, available in powder-coated black or polished finish, positioned set back from the base edge to give the piece its hovering appearance.
Does the Muuto Outline Sofa work in a smaller room?
The two-seater is the right choice for smaller living rooms and open-concept spaces where the three-seater would overpower the floor plan. The slim armrests and set-back legs reduce the visual footprint significantly relative to the actual seating area. Pairing the two-seater with one or two Outline Lounge Chairs often gives more flexibility than a larger single sofa in a tight plan.
Who designed the Muuto Outline Sofa?
The Outline was designed by Anderssen and Voll, an Oslo-based studio founded by Torbjorn Anderssen and Espen Voll in 2009. The two were previously co-founders of the Norwegian design group Norway Says, founded in 2000. They have been collaborating with Muuto since the brand launched in 2006 and have designed five sofa collections for them: Connect, Compose, Oslo, Outline, and Rest. The duo have been named both Norwegian and Scandinavian Designers of the Year.
Can the Muuto Outline Sofa and Lounge Chair be mixed in the same room?
Yes, and it often produces a stronger result than matching them exactly. The sofa and chair share the same aluminum base, the same construction, and the same silhouette, so they read as a family. Pairing them in different fabrics from the same colour family adds contrast without losing visual coherence. The proportions hold across both pieces, so neither dominates the other.
The Outline Sofa is built around a specific design argument: that a generous seat and a clean architectural silhouette are not mutually exclusive. The construction delivers on both. The proportions scale consistently from the two-seater through to the lounge chair, and the upholstery library is deep enough to suit most rooms and palettes.
The Habitus Design Studio works with clients across Canada on upholstery selection, room layout, and full interior projects. If you want help building a seating arrangement around the Outline family, that service is available.
