Sustainable Furniture Design: A Deep Dive into Gus Modern’s Practices

Recently, our London, Ontario showroom was the venue for an enlightening Design Talk and networking event for designers. The spotlight was on Darryl Forberg, a representative from the acclaimed Canadian furniture company, Gus* Modern. Known for its Scandinavian-inspired designs and commitment to sustainable manufacturing, Gus* Modern is a beacon for those passionate about timeless and eco-friendly furniture.

Unveiling Gus Modern’s Latest Collection

The Design Talk kicked off with Darryl Forberg introducing Gus* Modern’s latest furniture designs. Each piece, unique in its inspiration, was a testament to the company’s dedication to creating lasting and significant designs. The Baltic Chair, predicted to be a Canadian design icon in the coming decades, was a standout. This chair, still in production today, encapsulates Gus* Modern’s ethos of crafting enduring pieces.

Manufacturing Excellence: Embracing Sustainability with PET Fill and FSC® Certification

A key part of the presentation was an insight into Gus* Modern’s manufacturing practices. Two aspects were highlighted – the use of P.E.T. (Recycled Water Bottles) for fill and the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®) certification for responsibly sourced wood.

P.E.T. (Recycled Water Bottles) vs Conventional Fill: A Sustainable Approach

Darryl elaborated on the use of P.E.T. fill, derived from recycled water bottles, as a green alternative to traditional fill materials. This innovative process transforms plastic bottles into synthetic-down filling for upholstery, contributing to environmental conservation while ensuring lasting comfort and shape retention. This approach is integrated into most Gus* Modern sofas, armchairs, and select pillows, reflecting their commitment to design innovation and environmental responsibility.

Certified by the Forest Stewardship Council: Responsible Wood Sourcing

Wood, the primary material for Gus* Modern furniture, is sourced responsibly, as certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®). This certification reassures consumers of the responsible sourcing of wood used in Gus* Modern products. By opting for FSC®-certified products, consumers contribute to forest conservation and promote responsible wood usage for future generations.
