AJ Royal
The AJ Royal, designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1957 for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, is a notable example of his work. Initially found in the hotel's snack bar, lounge, and Panorama Lounge, the AJ Royal helped define Copenhagen's first high-rise building, inspired by New York skyscrapers, which opened in 1960. Originally known as the AJ Pendant, its segmented spherical design marked Jacobsen’s return to basic geometrical shapes.
Part of Jacobsen's comprehensive design concept for the hotel, the AJ Royal and other elements have become iconic. Jacobsen meticulously designed the hotel, including nearly all its original furniture and utility items. Among these, the AJ Lamp from 1957 is globally recognized. Initially produced in light grey, dark brown, and black, the AJ Royal is now available in white and has been reintroduced in black. In 2020, a smaller variant was launched to celebrate the hotel's 60th anniversary.
The AJ Royal's classic, graphic look remains timeless, whether illuminating a dining table, office, or showroom. It provides even downward light and creates ambience with its softened upward light.
