Scandinavian Coffee Tables: A Buyer's Guide

Workshop Coffee Table by Muuto

Furniture

The sofa gets chosen first, photographed most, and sat on for years. The coffee table, meanwhile, does the daily work: the morning cup, the stack of library books, the board game that never quite gets put away. A good Scandinavian coffee table is built for exactly that double life, presentable enough to anchor the room and sturdy enough to be used without ceremony.

Two measurements settle most of the decision before style enters it. The top should sit level with your sofa's seat cushion or 1" to 2" below, and there should be a comfortable walkway around at least one long side. From there it becomes a question of shape and material, and the six tables below cover that ground: round and rectangular, solid oak, linoleum, marble and cast glass.

Muuto Around: The Everyday Round Coffee Table

Two sizes of the Around working as one table: small in light blue beside large in dark green.

Thomas Bentzen's Around Coffee Table is defined by its raised edge, which he describes as "a subtle frame, warped around the table to border off its edge." The practical effect: pens, coasters and phones stay on the table. All versions are made with FSC certified wood, in oak, ash and a run of lacquered colours.

The three sizes are drawn to be combined. The small stands taller, so it tucks beside a sofa arm as a perch for a drink, while the large or extra large holds the middle of the room. If you are furnishing a condo living room, start with the small and large in two different finishes and move them together and apart as the evening demands.

Muuto Workshop: Solid Oak and Linoleum

Cecilie Manz builds furniture to a strict internal test: "Function is essential and if I cannot formulate a good reason for a new product to exist, it is better to refrain from making it." The Workshop Coffee Table passes it plainly. Frame and legs are lacquered solid oak, the top is oak veneer or linoleum, and the legs meet the top in one continuous line.

It comes in two footprints, a 47.2" by 16.9" rectangle and a 33.9" square, both 15" tall. The linoleum tops are the specialist's choice: silky matte, soft to the touch, and calm under a room full of objects. Warm grey linoleum on oak is the combination we would put in most Canadian family rooms, in front of the deepest sofa in the house.

BM67: Børge Mogensen's 1956 Coffee Table

The BM67's long, low proportions were drawn for exactly this: a full sofa wall.

Børge Mogensen designed the BM67 Coffee Table in 1956, and it carries his signature move: construction you are meant to see. The solid wood frame rides on a sledge base, and the exposed stretchers underneath come in raw brass that patinas over time, or black powder coated steel. The solid oak top is offered in soap treated, light oiled, oiled, smoked oiled and black lacquered finishes.

At 55.1"L x 21.65"W x 17.5"H, it is built for a long sofa or a sectional, keeping every seat within reach of a surface. The brass fittings are the ones for anyone who enjoys materials that show their age; the black steel keeps the lines graphic. We covered the designer's larger body of work in our Børge Mogensen spotlight.

Audo Passage: The Nesting Coffee Table Trio

The Passage Lounge Table in oak; three diameters are made to gather in a nest formation.

The Passage Lounge Table by Copenhagen studio Krøyer-Sætter-Lassen is a nesting coffee table system in solid FSC certified oak or lacquered walnut. The three sizes step in both directions: 19.7", 27.6" and 35.4" in diameter, standing 17", 15" and 13" tall in turn. Because the diameters grow as the heights fall, the tables gather into a tiered formation, each top on its own level.

Audo designed it as a flatpack, self-assembly kit, and the visible joinery is part of the look. For people who rearrange, the trio in one wood works as a single table that comes apart for game nights and gathers back into one footprint when the room needs to be open. In a small space, the largest size alone makes a complete round coffee table.

Androgyne: Danielle Siggerud's Sculptural Table

The Androgyne Lounge Table's columnar base carries a stone top with visible mineral veining.

Architect and designer Danielle Siggerud first developed the Androgyne series for Audo's former showroom cafe in Copenhagen, and the Androgyne Lounge Table keeps that public-space presence at home scale: a 47.2" by 17.7" top on a columnar base, 15" tall. The wood versions come in natural oak, dark stained oak and walnut. The stone tops are Kunis Breccia, marked by mineral fragments in warm hues, or Italian Calacatta Viola marble with purple veining.

Audo points out it works as both a lounge table and a bench for books, and the narrow footprint is the clue: it runs alongside a sofa the way a bench runs along a wall. If the room calls for a marble coffee table with the presence of sculpture, the full stone version is the piece to see in person; no two tops carry the same veining.

Sett LN12: Cast Glass and Marble, Set Like a Gem

The Sett LN12 in Bianco Carrara: the top sits inlaid in its dark chrome frame.

Luca Nichetto named the Sett LN12 Coffee Table for a jewellery technique in which gems are inlaid and precisely set into a frame. Here the frame is die cast and extruded aluminium in dark chrome, and the gem is the top: smoked cast glass, Bianco Carrara or Verde Guatemala marble, held low and wide at 55"W x 23"D x 13"H. &Tradition casts each glass top individually and lacquers the colour onto its underside, so the surface depth shifts slightly from piece to piece.

The marble tops are cut, polished to a matte finish and sealed with a protective treatment. This is the table for the formal end of the spectrum: a long sofa wall, low evening light, a finished room. The smoked glass version is our pick, because the frame's precision stays visible straight through the top.

Frequently Asked Questions

What height should a coffee table be?

Level with your sofa's seat cushion, or 1" to 2" below it. Most sofas put the seat between 15" and 18" from the floor, and the tables in this guide run from 13" to 18.1" tall, so there is a correct match for low modern sofas and higher traditional ones alike.

Should I choose a round or rectangular coffee table?

Follow the sofa and the walkways. A long sofa or sectional is best served by a rectangular table like the BM67 or Sett LN12, which keeps every seat within reach. Round tables like the Around and Passage ease movement through tight floor plans and are kinder in homes with small children.

How do I care for marble, glass and linoleum tops?

The marble tops here arrive polished and sealed with a protective treatment; wipe spills promptly and use coasters under anything that can etch. Glass needs only a damp cloth. Linoleum should be cleaned with a pH neutral cleaner and treated with linoleum care a few times a year, per Muuto's guidance.

Can I use two coffee tables together?

Yes, and two of these tables are designed for it. The Passage Lounge Table's three sizes descend in height as they grow in diameter, so they nest into a tiered formation. The Around Coffee Table's small size stands taller than its large, letting a pair work as one composition with two levels.

A Scandinavian coffee table has to anchor the room on an ordinary Tuesday and hold up to everything the household sets on it. Measure your sofa's seat height, walk the floor plan, and choose the material you will enjoy touching every day. If dining is next on your list, our Scandinavian dining table guide follows the same logic.

If you are weighing sizes or materials for a specific room, our design studio does this every week and is glad to help.
