The Muuto Strand Pendant: Benjamin Hubert's Cocoon of Light

Muuto Strand Pendant in Scandinavian Dining Room

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT

A pendant lamp spends most of its life switched off. It gets judged in the evening, over dinner, when the glow is doing the work, but it hangs there through every daylight hour as an object above the table. The Muuto Strand Pendant is the lamp that gets chosen at noon.

Benjamin Hubert designed the Strand for Muuto in 2019. Hubert is a British industrial designer and the founder of LAYER, a London studio whose client list runs through Nike, Google, Samsung and Braun. When Muuto commissioned him, what he brought was not a new shape so much as a new skin.

Unlit, the Strand holds its place in a room as a sculptural object rather than a fixture.

A Material Built to Survive the Sea

The shade is made of a cocoon composite that Muuto calls Cocoon Resin, sprayed onto a spinning steel frame in a three-step process: a fiber web, a layer of cocoon plastic, and a protective top coating. The material started life offshore, engineered as a protective skin for ships and turbines exposed to open water, which means the most cloud-like piece in Muuto's lighting program is built from marine engineering.

Up close, the surface reads as hundreds of fine strands stretched over the frame, semi-transparent, closer to a spun textile than to plastic. In daylight the steel structure shows faintly through the skin, so the shade has depth even when the bulb is cold. Switched on, the cocoon filters the light into a warm, even glow, and the strands cast a soft texture across the surface rather than a hard-edged shadow.

Strand Closed: A Bowl of Light Over the Table

The closed silhouette swells into a bowl, diffusing light through the cocoon shade in every direction.

The closed silhouette swells outward into a bowl. The full shade diffuses the glow through the cocoon in every direction, while a precise opening at the bottom drops direct light straight down onto the surface below. Over a dining table that split does two jobs at once: ambient light for the room, task light for the plates.

The Strand Closed comes in three diameters: 17.7", 23.6", and 31.5". Every closed size hangs from a suspension system with three metal wires rather than the cord alone. That detail matters more than it sounds. The three wires hold the shade dead level, which keeps the pool of direct light from the bottom opening centred on the table instead of drifting off toward one end.

The 23.6" size carries a standard dining table for four to six. The 31.5" is a statement scale, built for the open-concept great room with a vaulted ceiling, where the shade has 10 to 14 feet of vertical space to hang in and a whole seating area to glow over.

Strand Open: Light From Both Ends

The open silhouette is elongated, releasing direct light through openings at both top and bottom.

The Strand Open stretches the same material into an elongated form, open at both ends. Direct light escapes through the top and the bottom while the cocoon glows in between. The downlight works the surface below, and the uplight washes the ceiling above, which visually lifts a standard 8-foot ceiling.

The small measures 11" across and 14.7" tall, the medium 15.7" across and 19.8" tall. Those taller-than-wide proportions make the open silhouette the one to hang in multiples: two or three small pendants in a row over a kitchen island read as a rhythm of vertical forms rather than a single mass. The large flips the proportions to 23.6" across and 15.9" tall, wide enough to anchor a table on its own.

Hung low over a table, the open Strand pairs a focused downlight with a glow that carries across the room.

Two Silhouettes, One Room at a Time

Muuto Strand Pendant Lamps in open and closed silhouettes hanging together above a long Base table with Visu chairs
Open and closed Strand pendants mixed at varying heights over a long table, sharing one material language.

Because both silhouettes share the same white cocoon skin, they mix without fighting each other. Over a long table, alternating open and closed forms at slightly different heights builds a composition out of a single material, the way a cluster of clouds reads as one sky. In the condo dining nook with an 8-foot ceiling and no wall separating dining from living, a single 15.7" open or 23.6" closed pendant marks the dining zone and lets the glow carry into the rest of the space.

The Strand also rewards the rooms where you see it from the side: a stairwell, a double-height entry, a landing. At eye level the semi-transparent shade shows its inner structure and the point of light within it, and the lamp becomes something you look at rather than merely under.

The cocoon skin also comes down to table height. The Strand Table Lamp wraps the same material around a hidden light source, so the whole 15.4" form glows as a single object, and an inline dimmer on the cord takes it from reading brightness down to a low evening glow. On a sideboard or a bedside table it repeats the pendant's material at eye level, carrying one light idea through the whole room.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Muuto Strand Pendant come with a bulb?

No. Both the open and closed versions take one standard E26 bulb at a maximum of 60W, purchased separately. A white ceiling cap is included with every size. A 2700K bulb brings out the warmest tone in the cocoon material.

Can the Strand Pendant be dimmed?

Yes, through the bulb. Because the Strand uses a standard E26 socket, dimming depends on pairing a dimmable bulb with a compatible wall dimmer. Check that the bulb is rated as dimmable before buying, since a non-dimmable LED on a dimmer circuit will flicker.

How do you clean the cocoon shade?

With a soft, dry cloth only, and with the electricity switched off first. The protective top coating seals the strands, so dust wipes away without catching. Skip liquids and cleaning sprays entirely; the material is designed to be maintained dry.

The Strand takes a material engineered for the North Sea and turns it into the softest-looking object in the room. The closed silhouette is the dining table anchor, splitting its light between a diffused glow and a focused pool on the surface below. The open silhouette is the one for multiples and for rooms where the ceiling deserves some of the light, and both hold their presence through the daylight hours when the switch stays off.
