Gus* Modern: Three Sofas Worth Knowing

Gus* Modern: Three Sofas Worth Knowing

FURNITURE

Comfort in a sofa is a design decision, not a feeling that happens by accident. Seat depth, cushion fill, back support, arm height, the angle the back meets the seat. Every one of those variables is a lever a designer pulls deliberately, and pulling them in different directions produces sofas that feel completely different to sit on even when they look similar from across the room.

Gus* Modern has been designing modern furniture from Toronto since 2000, and their current sofa range is built on that idea. The Mulholland, Jane 2, and Sola are three sofas designed around three different ways a body wants to meet a piece of furniture at the end of the day. Tailored and upright. Mid-century and balanced. Cloud-soft and immersive. The construction philosophy is consistent across all three. The comfort each one delivers is not.

The catalogue is built around curated, set upholstery ranges for each sofa, all stocked, all ready to ship in one to two weeks. The textiles themselves are specified at a higher grade than the price points suggest. Gus* fabrics are double-rub tested and certified to California TB117-2013, and the joinery on the upholstered range is ANSI-BIFMA compliant, the same standard used to qualify furniture for commercial and contract environments. The result is a residential sofa built to specifications that hold up in heavy-use spaces, sold at a price that does not reflect that engineering. The price-to-value is the quietest part of the story and the one that matters most over a ten-year ownership.

Mulholland Sofa

Gus Modern Mulholland Sofa in Caledon Antler upholstery styled in a modern living room
The Mulholland Sofa carries a tuxedo silhouette into a contemporary room.

The archetype the Mulholland rebuilds is the tuxedo sofa, the structured silhouette where the arms and back sit at the same height to form an enveloping rectangle. The proportions are pulled from both mid-century and contemporary references, which is what keeps the silhouette feeling current rather than period.

The seat, back, and arms are blind-tufted, which gives the upholstery a quiet rhythm of surface detail without the formality of deep button tufting. There are no loose cushions. Everything is fixed in place, which means the sofa looks the same on a Sunday morning as it did the night before. A solid ash perimeter base runs the bottom of the frame with notched-dowel leg details, and the ash is FSC-certified. The inner frame is kiln-dried FSC-certified hardwood, the upholstery foam meets California TB117-2013 fire safety standards without flame retardant additives, and delicate piping detail traces the line where the arms meet the seat.

This is the sofa for the room that needs an anchor. Smaller living rooms where the floor plan would be swallowed by a deeper silhouette. Condos with eight-foot ceilings where visual weight closes a room down. More formal living rooms where the sofa needs to hold its shape through use. The upholstery range is curated across the Caledon and Parliament Stone collections, on a single Natural Ash frame finish.

Jane 2 Sofa

Gus Modern Jane 2 Sofa in Bayview Silver with Natural Ash base in a styled living room
The Jane 2 is the current generation of one of Gus* Modern's longest-running designs.

The Jane Series is one of Gus* Modern's longest-running designs, and the Jane 2 is the current generation. The archetype is the classic mid-century sofa: a clean rectangular silhouette, button-tufted cushions, piped upholstery edges, and an inset wood base that lifts the sofa an inch off the floor. The Jane 2 brings tighter proportions, sharper button-tufting, and an inset solid ash base available in two finishes.

The construction is where the Jane 2 shows its work. Reversible seat and back cushions are built with high-resilience polyurethane foam wrapped in Dacron, which produces a cushion supportive enough to sit upright on and soft enough to settle into. The suspension is a 9-gauge No-Sag sinuous spring system, the engineering detail that determines whether a sofa holds its shape through five and ten years of daily use. All joints are stress-tested, the inner frame is kiln-dried FSC-certified hardwood, and the build is ANSI-BIFMA compliant. The fabric is double-rub tested and California TB117-2013 certified, which is the kind of specification typically reserved for hospitality and contract work, not residential furniture at this price.

This is the everyday sofa. Mid-century-influenced rooms where the visual language is already in conversation. Family living rooms where the sofa is in service from morning coffee to evening television. The Jane 2 pairs into the Jane 2 LOFT Bi-Sectional if the room evolves and needs more seating. The upholstery range is curated across the Caledon, Merino, Bayview, and Parliament Stone collections, on either a Classic Walnut or Natural Ash base.

The cushions on the Jane 2 hold their shape in a way that becomes obvious about two years in. The No-Sag suspension and high-resilience foam are doing exactly what they are engineered to do, and the sofa looks the way it did on delivery day.

Sola Sofa

Gus Modern Sola Sofa styled in a bright modern living room
The Sola Sofa is built for unwinding rather than upright sitting.

The Sola is the deep-lounging sofa in the lineup. The archetype is the cloud-soft sofa designed for unwinding for hours rather than sitting upright for conversation. Gus* describes the design as cloud-like, and the description is literal: the back cushions are filled with the brand's signature PET fill, an eco-friendly synthetic down made from recycled plastic spun into billowy fibres. 378 plastic bottles are diverted from oceans, waterways, and landfills with the construction of a single Sola.

The visual details are deliberate. French-seam detailing runs along the cushions, stepped arms break what would be a single block silhouette, and the inset legs lift the body of the sofa off the floor enough to create a sense of weightlessness. The design draws on contemporary Italian sofa references and mid-century classics in equal measure, which is the combination that produces a silhouette feeling both soft and considered. The seat cushions are reversible on the fabric variants and built with high-resiliency medium-density foam wrapped in Dacron. The frame is kiln-dried hardwood with a No-Sag sinuous spring suspension. The Raleigh Chestnut variant is built with a semi-aniline performance leather designed to resist stains, scratches, and fading, which is the spec that produces a piece that ages gracefully rather than wearing out.

This is the sofa for the room where unwinding is the point. Larger living rooms with space for a sofa that dominates. Family rooms where afternoon naps are part of the weekend. Spaces built for entertaining where guests stay seated for hours. The Sola is available in three fabric upholsteries across the Maberly and Node collections, plus the performance leather option for clients who want a piece that develops patina over years.

The Mulholland is the tailored anchor for rooms where the sofa needs to hold its shape. The Jane 2 is the mid-century everyday piece for rooms where the sofa is in active service from morning to night. The Sola is the cloud-soft lounger for rooms where the sofa is meant to swallow you whole for the afternoon. Three sofas, three approaches, one brand thinking carefully about how a body meets a piece of furniture.

The curated upholstery range is the throughline. A tight set of stocked options keeps lead times in the one-to-two week range while the construction underneath holds the line on contract-grade specifications. The price-to-value of a Gus* Modern sofa is honest in a way that becomes obvious only after a few years of daily use.
