PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT
The Hashira Collection started with a field trip. Norm Architects, the Copenhagen studio founded in 2008 by Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen and Kasper Rønn, visited traditional Japanese washi papermakers, and the lamps they designed for Audo Copenhagen afterward carry that visit in their proportions. Audo describes the collection as a modern, Nordic take on the traditional Japanese rice paper lantern, a fusion of East and West, tradition and modernity.
The reference is easy to see. Each Hashira lamp is a clean cylinder of translucent fabric that glows evenly when lit, the way a paper lantern does. Audo builds the shade in linen, and the Raw finish we stock has a slub texture that shows in daylight and softens the light after dark.
One Cylinder, Eight Fixtures
The collection keeps a single form and repeats it across the ways a home actually uses light. There is a pendant in two sizes, a pendant cluster, a linear pendant for long tables, a flush ceiling lamp, a wall lamp, a floor lamp, a table lamp, and a cordless portable.
Because the fabric diffuses in every direction, a Hashira reads as ambient light in whatever mount you choose. That makes the family a practical way to light a whole room, or a whole floor plan, with one consistent material. A pendant over the table, a wall lamp in the hallway, and the portable on a sideboard use the same linen cylinder at three scales.
Over the Table
The pendant comes in a compact size and a larger one, and the fabric shade solves the usual dining-table problem of glare at eye level. The bulb sits behind linen from every seat, so you get an even column of light over the plates and a soft glow around it. Over a round table, the larger pendant hung low carries the setting on its own.
The pendant cluster groups several linen cylinders on one canopy, in a small and a large version. It is the statement piece of the family, sized for a double-height stairwell, an entry, or the centre of a great room, where the grouped cylinders read as one composition. The linear pendant stretches the single cylinder over a long dining table or a desk, spreading the diffused light along the full length of the surface.
Floor, Wall, and Ceiling
The floor lamp stands the cylinder at seated eye level, where it works beside a sofa or a reading chair as a full evening light source. The wall lamp mounts the same shade on a bracket and carries a rotary dimmer on its cord, and Audo styles it solo or in pairs, flanking a bed or a cabinet. The flush ceiling lamp is the quietest of the family, an even disc of linen light for hallways, bedrooms, and the spots where a pendant would hang too low.
The Portable and the Table Lamp
The corded table lamp suits a console or a bedside where it can stay put, and the portable version is cordless, so the lantern moves to the dinner table, a shelf, or a windowsill and recharges wherever it lands. In a home that already has a Hashira pendant or floor lamp, the portable extends the same light into the corners the wiring never reached.
The collection sits inside a larger Audo story we have covered before. Our Audo Copenhagen brand spotlight covers the design house behind it, and our pendant lighting guide places the Hashira pendant alongside the PH 5 and the Strand.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who designed the Audo Hashira Collection?
Norm Architects, the Copenhagen studio founded in 2008 by Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen and Kasper Rønn, designed the Hashira Collection for Audo Copenhagen. The design followed the studio's visit to traditional Japanese washi papermakers and reinterprets the rice paper lantern in linen.
What is the Hashira shade made of?
A translucent linen fabric stretched into a cylinder, which diffuses the bulb's light evenly in every direction. The Raw finish carries a visible slub texture; Audo also produces a white linen version.
Which Hashira works over a dining table?
The pendant, hung low, suits round and square tables, with the larger size carrying bigger rooms. The linear pendant is the version for long rectangular tables and desks, and the pendant cluster groups several cylinders on one canopy for double-height spaces and statement placements.
Is there a cordless Hashira?
Yes. The Hashira Table Lamp, Portable is the cordless member of the family, sized for side tables, shelves, and dinner settings, and it recharges between uses.
The Hashira Collection carries one material and one reference through eight fixtures. It lights a dining table, a hallway, a bedside, and a bookshelf with the same even linen glow, which is why it has become the lighting family our clients reach for to pull a whole floor plan together.
