PH 3/2 Pendant
The fixture is designed based on the principle of a reflective three-shade system, which directs the majority of the light downwards. The shades are made of hand blown opal three-layer glass, which is glossy on top and sandblasted matte on the underside, giving a soft and uniform light distribution.
Poul Henningsen designed the three-shade system in 1925/1926, initially for a Paris exhibition. His collaboration with Louis Poulsen lasted until his death in 1967. PH aimed to create glare-free lighting, directing light where needed and creating soft shadows with incandescent bulbs.
The PH 3/2 Pendant is part of the three-shade family, one of 19 versions available today. Over a thousand models have been produced, including table, floor, and wall lamps, as well as chandeliers popular in the 1930s. The lights came in various colors and sizes, with early shades made of metal and later glass.
Henningsen was the first to use a scientific approach to lighting, employing the logarithmic spiral for even light distribution and glare control. Each shade in the system reduces light equally due to their distance from the source. Model numbers correspond to shade sizes, with hybrid models like the PH 3/2 Pendant using a 30 cm top shade and smaller lower shades to allow for lower hanging heights.
